NHS Future Forum

May 2011

In our submission to the NHS Future Forum, we drew attention to some implications for patient safety and regulation arising from the proposals set out in the Health and Social Care Bill 2011. Our main questions centred on the impact of restructuring the NHS in England on health porfesisonal regulation. These questions included:

  • Who will fulfil the role of responsible officer following the abolition of PCTs, given their critical role in the revalidation of primary care doctors?
  • Who will hold the Performer's List - a list of primary care professionals able to provide care - following the abolition of PCTs?
  • Will the uncertainty around local arrangements for health professionals lead to an increase in inappropriate referrals to professional regulators?
