DH: Developing the healthcare workforce

Title: DH - Developing the healthcare workforce

Date: March 2011

Summary: The Department of Health published proposals for a new framework for education and training of the healthcare workforce. This consultation sought views on the issues and opportunities that would arise. In our response we agreed that an approach that allowed the development of a workforce that meets local healthcare demands is attractive. However this needs to be balanced against the impact this local approach may have on education providers. We also stressed the value in maintaining national standards of professional competence and conduct. This helps to promote consistency, fairness and equality, and benefits patients, health professionals and providers, as it supports workforce mobility. For these reasons we would be concerned if a new framework developed that duplicated existing statutory duties performed by health professional regulators.
