Section 29 of the National Health Service Reform and Health Care Professions Act 2002 gives CHRE important powers and responsibilities for protecting the public.
Through our review of final stage fitness to practise decisions, we use these powers and responsibilities to strengthen the regulatory framework and to enhance public protection.
Since April 2009, under our new powers within Section 115 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, we have also audited the decisions made by regulators at the initial stages of their Fitness to Practise procedures.
Our Scrutiny Committee reviews all areas of this Scrutiny & Quality work.
